  • The Vape Choice: Free To Choose Not To Smoke

    Freedom is choice. Without a choice of option A or option B, there is no freedom. A week ago, we celebrated the fourth of July. It is the day that we chose, as a new country to choose option B.


    We at Modern Smoking Solutions are celebrating our one-year anniversary. Last year on the 4th, we opened our doors to a different kind of freedom: self-employment. Our owner, Dani, decided to take on the risk that came with owning her own shop and try to carve out a piece of the dream.


    It has been a wild ride so far, between getting the shop up and running, creating our own premium line, to learning how to market it effectively. While it has been hard, it has also been rewarding.   Every month we are growing, which is exciting. It will take a pretty special second year to top the first year we were in business.


    Most of all, we have you to thank for your continued support and patronage! You are why we have been allowed to continue on this path.


    The Battle for Vaping’s Life


    As we are moving into the second year of our business, we are facing a battle that will help determine how the next couple of years turn out for the vape industry as a whole.


    This is also what vapers are declaring. They are choosing not to smoke and have chosen to vape. We are seeing that choice trying to be clawed from our hands. As the deeming regulations from the FDA get closer, we are seeing an effort by the vape community to fight back.


    Between the countless lawsuits against the FDA, to advocacy on Capitol Hill, people are trying to fight back in an effort to keep their freedom of choice. While our opponents are powerful people, the groundswell of vapers that have come to the defense of vaping has a very real chance of overtaking them.


    The FDA has made great mistakes in the past, as can be shown here.   Also, were are the statistics that show vaping as being more unsafe than cigarettes, yet the FDA has approved drugs so that over 8,000,000 of the country’s children are on psychiatric drugs without any concern with what this will mean for our society in the future. Also, if we want to go further, the FDA decided it was ok to destroy our food supply.


    It makes you wonder why they thought it was so important to “protect the children” from vaping while they allow all these other products to continue on the market unhindered. Look at where the profits are, there you will find the source of the FDA’s regulations.


    Changing Lives and Destroying Cigarettes


    It isn’t all about advocacy, though. People are changing their lives. Vaping has saved thousands of lives and will continue to do so if we are allowed to continue to help people make the switch. Vape is continually being shown to do significantly less damage than smoking while it helps people quit the tar and chemical infested cigarettes.


    The goal of the vape community is to turn these relics into a thing of the past, but only if given the opportunity to continue on our upward trajectory. So, even though we are celebrating the achievements that we have accomplished thus far, we have a lot of work ahead of us a industry.


    Whether it be changing the way that we market our products, to trying to change the perception of people’s opinions of vaping, the problems are there to be answered. And they will be answered, it is just a matter of at what costs. We are asking that they don’t destroy the industry before we answer those questions for ourselves.


    We really are there to help people, but it is a matter of showing people that we are serious about this.Also, advocacy groups like CASAA, need vapers to help with the show of solidarity when they are advocating on the Hill.  So if you like what they are doing, join in the fight.

  • Tolerance for Vaping: What Every Non Smoker Needs To Know About The Vaper

    You and your family are walking down the mall, and there are smokers everywhere.  You do your best to have your kids avoid the smoke, but you walk straight into a cloud of vape that seemingly came out of nowhere.  You want to yell at them and tell them that it is a ridiculous habit to have; why don’t they just stop?

    It happens all the time.  People who have never smoked or vaped are baffled by people who do.  While we all understand that smoking is extremely harmful for us, including smokers, what most people, who haven’t had to try to quit smoking, don’t understand is the vaper’s passion for what they are doing.

    We want to give some advice for the people in your life who aren’t in the same place as you, so that we can begin to help them understand why this has become your life.

    It’s Not The Vapor

    People like to think that the biggest thing for vapers is the big clouds or the flavors.  From what we have seen, it is neither.  It’s the fact that they are not smoking.  People are in love with not smoking.  They are happy that they can breathe again. They don’t smell like an ashtray. 

    You can see it in the way they talk and walk; when a customer quits smoking, there is a pride that exudes from them.  They know what they did and it makes them happy. Quitting is one of the hardest things that people go through in their life.

    Just Quit. I Don’t Get Why You Started In The First Place

    We get it Mr. Non-smoker, we shouldn’t have started in the first place, and if we had the ability to go back in time, we would choose a different path.  As there is no way to do that, this is one of the best ways to change one of the worst habits we ever picked up. We have a way to fix it and we are doing it. 

    Little did you know, we are actually completely aware that putting things in our body that doesn’t belong there could be bad.  Guess what though? It is the fact that there is scientific evidence that this is a safer way to get the nicotine that we need as we quit, but it actually tastes pretty well.

    We are slowly stepping our nicotine down, and working a plan on how to quit an addiction that had overtaken our lives.  We will quit, but all in good time, as it is not as easy to just say I’m going to quit doing something that I have been doing for as long as I can remember.

    We Understand Why You Fear What You Don’t Understand

    It is a natural thing for humans to fear what they don’t understand, but in all reality, before you tell us what is good or bad for us you need to do some research into what is happening.  There is more anecdotal evidence and scientific evidence as to why this is safer for us then why it would be worse for us. 

    If you ask any vaper, who was also a smoker, about the changes in their life since they started to vape, you would find out what we are talking about.  We breathe better, we taste things again, we can go somewhere and not have to excuse ourselves to go smoke a cigarette and come back embarrassed that we smell like the ashtray we were standing by. 

    It’s something that the non-smoker will never understand.  So don’t tell us you do, just accept that smelling like watermelon or strawberry is better than smelling like a cigarette.  You will also like it better.  We know because of the look you used to give us after we came back.

    Vaping Is Dangerous

    While we see the same news reports that you do about these devices blowing up, it is actually a very small number.  Most of these are due to user error.  It’s also why it’s is so important that we educate ourselves on the devices that we use. 

    Most shops will not allow you to walk out until you understand how the device works.  It is important that the user understands for a number of reasons.  If they don’t understand how it works, it won’t help them quit because they will not be happy with it. 

    Also, they need to know how to refill it, take care of it, how to change coils, and they need to know what type of e liquid they are using and what is in it.  All these things go into having a great experience with vaping, and are the reasons to why we try to explain and show people how to use their device safely

    You Are Just Moving From One Addiction To Another

    While this may look like the case, it is not the goal of companies like ours.  Our owner, Dani, explains it very well:

                    “Many people look at the vape industry as an extension of the tobacco companies like Phillip Morris, but it couldn’t be further from the truth.  Our goal as a company is to get people to quit using nicotine and this is the most effective way we have found to make that happen.  We continually encourage people to lower their nicotine intake until they reach zero.  At that point, we want to create the environment to make sure that they no longer are our customers.  Our whole mission is to create non customers.“

    It’s a lofty goal, but that really is what’s most important.  To give people their freedom from the addiction is a big ask and the sooner the non-smoker understands that, the easy it will be to achieve it. We want people not in the industry to see where we are coming from and what we are trying to do.  It is not as simple as just give it up.  

    Telling people to just quit doing something that has been a daily part of their life for years is the same as telling people not to brush their teeth every day, it just won’t happen.

  • Pay Attention To The Excuses You Are Making Not To Quit Smoking

    So how long have you been smoking? Has it been ten years? Or five? Or maybe even 30.  Do you actually even enjoy it anymore?  There may have been a time when you did, but now it is just something that you are, isn’t it?

    Well it doesn’t have to be.  All the negatives about smoking well outweigh the enjoyment you are getting from it.  You have probably tried to quit multiple times over the years, but it keeps dragging you back into its death grip.  You know it’s not healthy, and you know that it sucks.  Yet every time you pull one out of the pack, you inevitably light it up.

    Most every smoker knows that they want to quit but we all at one time give ourselves excuses to why we don’t want to.  Our mind is very good at taking the shortest route possible.  It loves little hacks and tricks that make our lives easier so it doesn’t have to think as much.

     Because our mind does that, it will create myths so that we do not have to go through withdrawal symptoms after we quit smoking.  It tells us that a cigarette actually calms our nerves.  Which is blatantly false as nicotine is a stimulant.  The calming portion comes in when your mind doesn’t have to work.

    Your Brain Creates Your Excuse

    So what we know is that because your brain is addicted to nicotine and doesn’t want to go through any hardship to try to change it, it will create your excuses for you.  If you were to ask yourself, “What’s my excuse?” you would probably be able to come up with five to ten.  It is really that simple. 

    We all want to believe that our case is a special one, but in reality, we all go through something similar.  We are addicted, and when we try to get off of that substance it is really hard.  It hurts and your mind doesn’t want to go through it. 

    That is where vaping comes in.  It allows you to first stop smoking cigarettes but you still get the nicotine that you are addicted to.  After you are comfortable not smoking anymore, you start to edge your nicotine down.  Step by step.  It allows your brain to not have to come up with excuses, because you are slowly redesigning your neural pathway.  Slowly but surely you are making yourself less dependent on nicotine. 

    It makes it easier; not perfect but easier.  You get to have that community around you of people in the same boat as you.  You have an activity to step away from the monotony of the day for.

    I’m under a lot of stress right now

    We have gone over a little bit of this earlier, but much of the stress that you carry in your life can be managed without smoking.  Smoking actually increases stress, as when you really need a cigarette but can’t in the situation that you are in.  Many people will not be able to quit thinking about that cigarette and are not actually focused on their task at hand.

    Smoking Helps Me Concentrate

    It is a known fact that smoking actually reduces the oxygen in your brain, which increases the risk of a heart attack.  The so called boost in concentration is because during the day, you are going through mini withdraws, so when you smoke a cigarette and are able to focus it is because your brain has gotten the thing that it was craving. 

    It’s too hard to quit

    This for many people is the biggest excuse.  They believe that it is hard, and guess what it can be.  That is why we are sitting here telling you to pay attention to your excuses.  The great thing about this is that there is a way to have a little help along the way.

    Vaping is a great choice because you have a community and a way to rationally step down.  You get to take it at your pace.  You have people who want to teach you how to do it, who want to see you succeed, and who will be there with you if you fail in your first attempt.

  • Battery Safety: Because It Is Actually Important

    In this post we are going to be going over why you need to put a small amount of thought into your battery choice when buying your mod.  If you don’t choose the right battery for your box it can lead to an unpleasant experience or something much worse.  And that is what we are here to stop, so follow along, and let’s learn about this important part of the vaping process.

    There are a few parts to understanding a battery.  They are: how to read the name, what is mAh, knowing how to choose between capacity versus amps, and best practices for batteries.  Doesn’t it just sound exhilarating? Well let’s get started then!

    LG 18650 Battery

    How to Read the Name:

    See this picture? It’s just confusing isn’t it? Well we have a few resources that will help you to know what you are actually looking at.

    You are looking at an LG HG2 18650 3000 mAh.  The 18 is the diameter in millimeters, and 650 is the height in millimeters. Other designations you will see on batteries can be seen here, and if you click on the battery above you will have another resource for yourself. They explain it better than we could so feel free to check them out. 

    What is a mAh anyway?

    A mAh is short for milliampere-hour, and it is a measurement of how much of an electrical charge a particular battery will hold.  The higher the mAh is, the longer operating time for a device that is using constant power.  There are certainly things that will affect this rating, but on as a general rule the higher this number is, the better battery life there is. 

    Capacity v. Amps: Who wins?

    By and large, most people who are vaping will want capacity as this is what allows them to get through a day without worrying about charging their batteries and not having their vape available, especially if they are quitting smoking.

    There are some who will need higher amps.  These are people who are called builders.  They are building their coils and going low sub ohm (which will be explained at a later date).  Choosing between the two of them can be tough call because there is a tradeoff.  Batteries can do a little of both or much more of one or the other, and this is why it can be confusing.  Most people will find they don’t need the high amps and will prefer having the longer battery life.

    Common Best Practices:

    1. Do not overcharge your batteries. Also, you should not pull them off the charger and put them directly to use in your mod.  They need time to cool. One of the most important things is to make not charge past 4.25 volts and to never make it to 4.5 volts as this can make your battery explode. If your voltage gets below 3.6 volts, you should recharge as soon as possible.
    2. Handle your mod and batteries with care; these are electrical devices that can malfunction if not treated properly. Do not leave your tank attached to your mod overnight especially when you have a non-removable internal battery. Store your batteries in a case, and especially do not leave them in your pocket loose.  There is that possibly that your keys could complete a circuit on the battery and cause it to fire.  Do not let that be you.
    3. Temperature is important when you decide on your battery. The continuous current rate of your battery will determine how hot your battery runs.  This rating is usually capped at 167° Fahrenheit. If it reaches this temperature, your battery will start to age quickly or become damaged. It will then decrease not only the lifespan of the batteries but also the capacity and internal resistance of the battery.  The resistance being damage will in turn increase the temp of the battery, causing more damage to the battery. 
    4. Make sure you are buying authentic batteries. Many companies on the market today are taking batteries from the Big 4 suppliers of LG, Samsung, Sony, and Panasonic and rewrapping them and then bumping up their ratings.  This is dangerous because of it does matter what the amps are.  You cannot exceed this with your coil without you taking on undue risk.

  • Vaping vs Smoking: 10 Reasons Why Vaping Is Better Than Smoking

    When you are looking to make the switch into vaping, there are going to be countless things that you hear from everyone.  Whether good or bad, you are bound to have some preconceived ideas about vaping.  What we do not want to see is someone who disregards vaping because of the wrong reasons. 

    That is why we have been working on this series of blog posts to get you the truth about vaping.  We hear it every day.  People come into the shop and are confused because they are hearing so many negative things from the media. We find it strange that it is the same people in the media who have been saying for decades that we all need to quit smoking, but now that people are trying to quit, they are fighting one of the best tools that we have to help us quit.

    This is why we have this fantastic list of ten reasons why vaping is better than smoking.

    1. Smell is a fantastic thing to have.

    Smelling great is something that we all try to achieve every day.  We hope in the shower and use fancy soaps that smell good.  Get out put a little perfume on and some deodorant, just to keep that scent all day long.  Yet, then we go and light a cigarette and it destroys everything we just did.

    For many people, when they are around people who don’t smoke, they worried that they stank of cigarettes.  Going to give your boyfriend a hug, and worried what he was thinking? Or maybe it was every time you hugged your parents.  It definitely was a huge burden of anxiety for many people.

    Not only that, but smoking can destroy your sense of smell, as research way back in 1990 showed.  They showed that it can take as many years as you smoke to fully regain it, but when you quit, you can definitely start to see all that there is a huge difference between what you can smell now and what you couldn’t then.

    2. You get to taste things as they were meant to be tasted.

    Once you make the shift to vaping, within less than a week, you start to get your taste back.  It is an amazing thing to have happen to you.  You love coffee when you smoked? Well you haven’t tasted anything until after you quit.  It becomes even more amazing! Everything you put into your mouth begins to take on new flavors.

    Every time you light up, your taste buds are getting weaker.  Your ability to perceive bitter is getting beat up.  It’s not that you are killing all your taste buds, just that they are not doing their job to the best of their ability.  Don’t hate on your taste buds.

    3. In the long run, it’s cheaper.

    When you first start vaping, you may see the price of some of the mods as ridiculous.  What you don’t understand yet, is that those devices will help you destroy your addiction.  It is what is going to keep you from being a slave to the cigarettes for the rest of your life.  As you take on the addiction, you slowly step your nicotine levels down until you are at zero and that is when you lay the vape down.  You have your life back and that is the whole point of this thing.

    Not only are you not paying out every single day for a pack of smokes, but your long term health is helped.  You don’t have to worry about the long term health effects of being a smoker, because you will be a non-smoker.  Your health insurance will go down in a year after you quit because you are less of a risk as well.

    4. Heart disease? High Blood Pressure? Maybe not.

    One of those great benefits of quitting smoking is you that all these things start to happen as soon as you point down that cigarette.

    5. You get to choose what flavor you vape on.

    What flavors do you get with cigarettes? Menthol or non-Menthol.  They all will pretty much taste close to the same.  What is amazing about vape is if you dream it up, it can usually be made.  Want key lime cheesecake? Well you can get that.  You got a hankering for candy canes? You might just like some Just Claus. 

    It really is that awesome.  You can vape on pretty close to anything that you want and get the nicotine that you need to help you continue on your path of quitting. 

    6. Vape disappears, smoke lingers.

    Worries about second hand smoke are real and have been shown by science to be a danger to all those around them. But that is another difference between vaping and smoking.  Second hand smoke has been shown to linger in the air for about 20 minutes before dissipating completely.  Initial studies have shown that it can take as little as 11 seconds before vapor dissipates. 

    Now that is an initial study and more research needs to be done, but as you can see from this study, any trace amounts of chemicals in exhaled vapor is negligible compared to second hand smoke.  It is very telling that the difference is so stark.

    7. Tired of being shunned? Try Vaping

    The vaping community is one of the most inclusive groups to come around.  They have a great desire to help each other quit smoking and to fight for their right to vape.  Heck there is even a political party of vapers in England trying to get elected to help fight to keep vaping alive in the marketplace.

    Vapers will are very accommodating to new vapers.  If you have questions, you never have to hesitate to ask because they are more than willing to share the knowledge that they have accumulated.  It is very important to them that you understand what you are getting into.  Many people do not know what the right terms, or what they are looking at.  Any shop that is worth your time will spend the time for you to understand things like this.  They will teach you what you need to know to be a successful vaper.

    8. Breathing is really amazing.

    When you quit smoking an amazing thing starts to happen; you start to the process of clearing your lungs out.  No longer are you putting tar into your body. Your body will start to heal itself and you will notice that you may have to expel quite a bit of it.  This is normal and in no way should discourage you from vaping.  You are beginning to heal and this is a necessary function to get past cigarettes.

    What you will notice with time is that you will begin to be able to do your day to day activities with more energy.  You will not be out of breath trying to do things like walk up a short flight of steps.  If you are an active person, everything becomes easier when you can actually breathe.  It makes you want to go do things.  Life becomes a much healthier place when you are not actively destroying yourself on an hourly basis.

    9. Trying to quit nicotine altogether? Vaping is the way to do it.

    Vaping was created to quit cigarettes.  It is the whole point of what we are doing.  Helping people get their freedom back is very important to us.  That is why if you want to get nicotine out of your life, we have a plan to do that. 

    When you start vaping, you will usually have a higher content of nicotine in your juice than you want.  That is to help control the urges that you will experience when you switch.  You are quitting thousands of chemicals at the same time, but the most important one that you have to control is the nicotine.  It can make or break your attempt to quit. 

    This is the number one reason why vaping is the ultimate tool in achieving the quit.  It allows you to quit all of the chemicals in cigarettes except nicotine, and then you follow a step by step plan of lowering your nicotine content until you no longer need to vape.  It is set up for you to achieve greatness.

    10. Vaping has only 4 ingredients as opposed to 4,000 chemicals.

    Nicotine, vegetable glycerin, propylene glycol, and flavoring (aka e liquid, vape juice, e juice); it is that simple.  Those ingredients are all you need to beat the cigarette out of your life.  Your smokes have not only been giving you the nicotine you are craving but they also have additives that are only there to help you stay addicted to them. 

    Three of e liquids are found in many of the foods that you eat on a daily basis, and it is being found that nicotine may not be as harmful as once thought, but only if given in a form that is not bad for you.

  • Vaping Into the Quit

    If you have ever tried to quit smoking, you know it can really be tough.  That's why we are here to help.  There are a number ways that you can try, but one way we have seen that is effective for our customers is vaping.  Every day we have people coming in to quit smoking and use vaping to put the habit down.  It can be done. 


    Recognizing that you have reasons to quit!

    One of the biggest issues that people who quit smoking face is not really recognizing the reasons why they need/want to quit smoking.  It is very easy for those of us on the other side to forget, as we have already been through the process of quitting.  It is one of the hardest steps to take.

    The cigarette has been your best friend for years. That time your boyfriend dumped you, your cigarette was there.  Remember when you got a huge raise at work? Your cigarette was there.  Remember when you had your first kid, the nerves and the joy? Well, your cigarette was there as well.  It has always been there, with you through the thick and the thin.  The cold winters and the heat of summer.  No one has been as big a part of your life as a cigarette, and this is what makes it so damn hard to quit. 

    It all seems so easy once you are on the other side.  But the reason for getting to the other side is to know that there is freedom once you get there.  Find the reason, whether it comes from wanting to see your kids grow up or because you want to run your first 5k.  This is the single most important step that you need to take.

    Quitting is made easier

    If you find those reasons to quit, that is where vaping comes in.  Vaping can be used as a supplement to get you through those first few hard weeks of coming down off of all the chemicals that you put into your body.

    Your cigarette friend has been poisoning you in almost every way imaginable, and yet we all continued to go back to it.  We woke up in the morning proclaiming that this would be the day, and yet, right after the coffee, you walk outside with cigarette in your mouth.

    But here is how that changes.  Vaping, it’s this trend that you have been hearing a lot about.  And guess, it is better than a trend.  It is changing lives for the better.

    Understand what vaping is; it’s actually important.

    So you have made that decision to quit and now you are wondering how to do it.  You could go with the patch or gum, or you could even go cold turkey.  The question is why would you? There is a better way, and that is to vape!

    Vaping doesn’t have to be scary because that is what we are here for.  First step is to know what you are jumping into.  The biggest thing to know is that vaping is not supposed to become a way of life for you.  It is a tool that you are going to use to get your freedom back, 10 minutes at a time.

    So the basic fundamentals that you need to know about vaping are what ingredients go into the juice that you are vaping on.  Four ingredients is all that it is. Vegetable glycerin, propylene glycol, flavoring, and nicotine; these four ingredients combine to give you that sensation of smoking, and that is why vaping helps the person trying to quit.  You get both the nicotine that your body craves, but also that same movement and sensation that you are smoking.  Do you want to see a list comparison between the ingredients in a cigarette and vape? Well here you go. And just for good measure, here is another one.

    Just by the list alone, you can see that this is going to be better for you. While it is better than smoking, it should be used as a tool to get nicotine out of your life.  This is why we always suggest a cessation plan.

    Nicotine has to go!

    The whole point to all of this is to end your addiction to nicotine, to live a happier and healthier life.  Every time you step out to light up, there is 10 minutes gone of your day.  A pack a day, 200 minutes which just so happens to be about three hours and change of your life spent in your ritual of smoking. 

    That’s a lot of the hours spent trying to get your nicotine on.  How much more can you get done? How much better could your relationships be if you had that time back? How much better could your health be? How much less stress would you be under if every hour or so you weren’t craving your nicotine. 

    It will make a huge difference in your life.  That is why once you start vaping you have to be under the mindset that you need to get rid of your nicotine as soon as possible.  You will most likely start fairly high in your nicotine, but set a goal to go down two milligrams in your first 2 weeks. Then you keep reducing it.  However long it takes you to get to zero doesn’t matter.  What matters is that slowly but surely you are winning the battle.  You are taking that step.  You are pushing forward in your goal. 

    As you can see, there is a way to never be tied to another cigarette.  While vaping will help you, it still won’t do it all for you.  You have to be willing and have the strength of will to see out quitting nicotine forever.  If you don’t, there will always be the chance that you return to cigarettes.  And as we all know, it is not a habit that is healthy for you, and those around you.  If you are willing, we are here to help you in this process.  As a company that is our goal, to help you see out the addiction to cigarettes and start to transform your life!

    It really is the best thing that you could do for you, and the only person stopping it from happening is you.  So the question comes down to: Are you ready to make ready to end it?
