  • The Vape Choice: Free To Choose Not To Smoke

    Freedom is choice. Without a choice of option A or option B, there is no freedom. A week ago, we celebrated the fourth of July. It is the day that we chose, as a new country to choose option B.

     

    We at Modern Smoking Solutions are celebrating our one-year anniversary. Last year on the 4th, we opened our doors to a different kind of freedom: self-employment. Our owner, Dani, decided to take on the risk that came with owning her own shop and try to carve out a piece of the dream.

     

    It has been a wild ride so far, between getting the shop up and running, creating our own premium line, to learning how to market it effectively. While it has been hard, it has also been rewarding.   Every month we are growing, which is exciting. It will take a pretty special second year to top the first year we were in business.

     

    Most of all, we have you to thank for your continued support and patronage! You are why we have been allowed to continue on this path.

     

    The Battle for Vaping’s Life

     

    As we are moving into the second year of our business, we are facing a battle that will help determine how the next couple of years turn out for the vape industry as a whole.

     

    This is also what vapers are declaring. They are choosing not to smoke and have chosen to vape. We are seeing that choice trying to be clawed from our hands. As the deeming regulations from the FDA get closer, we are seeing an effort by the vape community to fight back.

     

    Between the countless lawsuits against the FDA, to advocacy on Capitol Hill, people are trying to fight back in an effort to keep their freedom of choice. While our opponents are powerful people, the groundswell of vapers that have come to the defense of vaping has a very real chance of overtaking them.

     

    The FDA has made great mistakes in the past, as can be shown here.   Also, were are the statistics that show vaping as being more unsafe than cigarettes, yet the FDA has approved drugs so that over 8,000,000 of the country’s children are on psychiatric drugs without any concern with what this will mean for our society in the future. Also, if we want to go further, the FDA decided it was ok to destroy our food supply.

     

    It makes you wonder why they thought it was so important to “protect the children” from vaping while they allow all these other products to continue on the market unhindered. Look at where the profits are, there you will find the source of the FDA’s regulations.

     

    Changing Lives and Destroying Cigarettes

     

    It isn’t all about advocacy, though. People are changing their lives. Vaping has saved thousands of lives and will continue to do so if we are allowed to continue to help people make the switch. Vape is continually being shown to do significantly less damage than smoking while it helps people quit the tar and chemical infested cigarettes.

     

    The goal of the vape community is to turn these relics into a thing of the past, but only if given the opportunity to continue on our upward trajectory. So, even though we are celebrating the achievements that we have accomplished thus far, we have a lot of work ahead of us a industry.

     

    Whether it be changing the way that we market our products, to trying to change the perception of people’s opinions of vaping, the problems are there to be answered. And they will be answered, it is just a matter of at what costs. We are asking that they don’t destroy the industry before we answer those questions for ourselves.

     

    We really are there to help people, but it is a matter of showing people that we are serious about this.Also, advocacy groups like CASAA, need vapers to help with the show of solidarity when they are advocating on the Hill.  So if you like what they are doing, join in the fight.

  • Tolerance for Vaping: What Every Non Smoker Needs To Know About The Vaper

    You and your family are walking down the mall, and there are smokers everywhere.  You do your best to have your kids avoid the smoke, but you walk straight into a cloud of vape that seemingly came out of nowhere.  You want to yell at them and tell them that it is a ridiculous habit to have; why don’t they just stop?

    It happens all the time.  People who have never smoked or vaped are baffled by people who do.  While we all understand that smoking is extremely harmful for us, including smokers, what most people, who haven’t had to try to quit smoking, don’t understand is the vaper’s passion for what they are doing.

    We want to give some advice for the people in your life who aren’t in the same place as you, so that we can begin to help them understand why this has become your life.

    It’s Not The Vapor

    People like to think that the biggest thing for vapers is the big clouds or the flavors.  From what we have seen, it is neither.  It’s the fact that they are not smoking.  People are in love with not smoking.  They are happy that they can breathe again. They don’t smell like an ashtray. 

    You can see it in the way they talk and walk; when a customer quits smoking, there is a pride that exudes from them.  They know what they did and it makes them happy. Quitting is one of the hardest things that people go through in their life.

    Just Quit. I Don’t Get Why You Started In The First Place

    We get it Mr. Non-smoker, we shouldn’t have started in the first place, and if we had the ability to go back in time, we would choose a different path.  As there is no way to do that, this is one of the best ways to change one of the worst habits we ever picked up. We have a way to fix it and we are doing it. 

    Little did you know, we are actually completely aware that putting things in our body that doesn’t belong there could be bad.  Guess what though? It is the fact that there is scientific evidence that this is a safer way to get the nicotine that we need as we quit, but it actually tastes pretty well.

    We are slowly stepping our nicotine down, and working a plan on how to quit an addiction that had overtaken our lives.  We will quit, but all in good time, as it is not as easy to just say I’m going to quit doing something that I have been doing for as long as I can remember.

    We Understand Why You Fear What You Don’t Understand

    It is a natural thing for humans to fear what they don’t understand, but in all reality, before you tell us what is good or bad for us you need to do some research into what is happening.  There is more anecdotal evidence and scientific evidence as to why this is safer for us then why it would be worse for us. 

    If you ask any vaper, who was also a smoker, about the changes in their life since they started to vape, you would find out what we are talking about.  We breathe better, we taste things again, we can go somewhere and not have to excuse ourselves to go smoke a cigarette and come back embarrassed that we smell like the ashtray we were standing by. 

    It’s something that the non-smoker will never understand.  So don’t tell us you do, just accept that smelling like watermelon or strawberry is better than smelling like a cigarette.  You will also like it better.  We know because of the look you used to give us after we came back.

    Vaping Is Dangerous

    While we see the same news reports that you do about these devices blowing up, it is actually a very small number.  Most of these are due to user error.  It’s also why it’s is so important that we educate ourselves on the devices that we use. 

    Most shops will not allow you to walk out until you understand how the device works.  It is important that the user understands for a number of reasons.  If they don’t understand how it works, it won’t help them quit because they will not be happy with it. 

    Also, they need to know how to refill it, take care of it, how to change coils, and they need to know what type of e liquid they are using and what is in it.  All these things go into having a great experience with vaping, and are the reasons to why we try to explain and show people how to use their device safely

    You Are Just Moving From One Addiction To Another

    While this may look like the case, it is not the goal of companies like ours.  Our owner, Dani, explains it very well:

                    “Many people look at the vape industry as an extension of the tobacco companies like Phillip Morris, but it couldn’t be further from the truth.  Our goal as a company is to get people to quit using nicotine and this is the most effective way we have found to make that happen.  We continually encourage people to lower their nicotine intake until they reach zero.  At that point, we want to create the environment to make sure that they no longer are our customers.  Our whole mission is to create non customers.“

    It’s a lofty goal, but that really is what’s most important.  To give people their freedom from the addiction is a big ask and the sooner the non-smoker understands that, the easy it will be to achieve it. We want people not in the industry to see where we are coming from and what we are trying to do.  It is not as simple as just give it up.  

    Telling people to just quit doing something that has been a daily part of their life for years is the same as telling people not to brush their teeth every day, it just won’t happen.

  • Pay Attention To The Excuses You Are Making Not To Quit Smoking

    So how long have you been smoking? Has it been ten years? Or five? Or maybe even 30.  Do you actually even enjoy it anymore?  There may have been a time when you did, but now it is just something that you are, isn’t it?

    Well it doesn’t have to be.  All the negatives about smoking well outweigh the enjoyment you are getting from it.  You have probably tried to quit multiple times over the years, but it keeps dragging you back into its death grip.  You know it’s not healthy, and you know that it sucks.  Yet every time you pull one out of the pack, you inevitably light it up.

    Most every smoker knows that they want to quit but we all at one time give ourselves excuses to why we don’t want to.  Our mind is very good at taking the shortest route possible.  It loves little hacks and tricks that make our lives easier so it doesn’t have to think as much.

     Because our mind does that, it will create myths so that we do not have to go through withdrawal symptoms after we quit smoking.  It tells us that a cigarette actually calms our nerves.  Which is blatantly false as nicotine is a stimulant.  The calming portion comes in when your mind doesn’t have to work.

    Your Brain Creates Your Excuse

    So what we know is that because your brain is addicted to nicotine and doesn’t want to go through any hardship to try to change it, it will create your excuses for you.  If you were to ask yourself, “What’s my excuse?” you would probably be able to come up with five to ten.  It is really that simple. 

    We all want to believe that our case is a special one, but in reality, we all go through something similar.  We are addicted, and when we try to get off of that substance it is really hard.  It hurts and your mind doesn’t want to go through it. 

    That is where vaping comes in.  It allows you to first stop smoking cigarettes but you still get the nicotine that you are addicted to.  After you are comfortable not smoking anymore, you start to edge your nicotine down.  Step by step.  It allows your brain to not have to come up with excuses, because you are slowly redesigning your neural pathway.  Slowly but surely you are making yourself less dependent on nicotine. 

    It makes it easier; not perfect but easier.  You get to have that community around you of people in the same boat as you.  You have an activity to step away from the monotony of the day for.

    In honor of your excuse, here are some of the top reasons we hear why people won’t quit:

    What happens after you quit smoking

    I’m under a lot of stress right now

    We have gone over a little bit of this earlier, but much of the stress that you carry in your life can be managed without smoking.  Smoking actually increases stress, as when you really need a cigarette but can’t in the situation that you are in.  Many people will not be able to quit thinking about that cigarette and are not actually focused on their task at hand.

    Smoking Helps Me Concentrate

    It is a known fact that smoking actually reduces the oxygen in your brain, which increases the risk of a heart attack.  The so called boost in concentration is because during the day, you are going through mini withdraws, so when you smoke a cigarette and are able to focus it is because your brain has gotten the thing that it was craving. 

    It’s too hard to quit

    This for many people is the biggest excuse.  They believe that it is hard, and guess what it can be.  That is why we are sitting here telling you to pay attention to your excuses.  The great thing about this is that there is a way to have a little help along the way.

    Vaping is a great choice because you have a community and a way to rationally step down.  You get to take it at your pace.  You have people who want to teach you how to do it, who want to see you succeed, and who will be there with you if you fail in your first attempt. 

    It is never too late to start.

  • Why You Don't Want To Be The Closet Smoker

    You are standing in line, with your coffee and a snack.  You have quit smoking for about three months now by using vaping, and you couldn’t have felt better about yourself. The next thing you know, you are sitting in your car and lighting up a cigarette.  And you don’t know what happened.

    This is unfortunately an all too familiar story that we are hearing.  People are actually quitting smoking, but will go back to it.  When they do it, they then will try to hide it.  They become the closet smoker, sneaking off to have a cigarette, but vaping in front of other people because they don’t want them to know.

    For most this is the reason that they wanted to quit in the first place.  They were tired of having to hide their habit, and were looking for a way out.  But here they are again, sneaking around, trying to cover up the smell.  But for all the perfume and gum out there, the only thing that actually gets the cigarette smell out is completely quitting.  It sticks to everything.  Your clothes, your hair, your teeth; it really is everywhere and there is nothing you can do to change it.

    And this is why you need to be aware of the threat that 3 months poses.  For a reason that we have not quite figured out, right around three months after making the switch, people will sometimes struggle to get past it.  They will find a reason to return to smoking.  It seems that when people think that they have the habit kicked, is when this phenomenon is happening.

    So if you think that you are going to have trouble around this mark, there are a number of things that you can try, so you don’t become the closet smoker again.

    1. Don’t reduce your nicotine level down too quickly.

    For most people after they quit smoking and start living their life without cigarettes, they want to also start lowering their nicotine level.  While this is highly encouraged and recommended, you also have to know yourself well enough.  For some people, once they kick the habit of smoking, they can quit nicotine altogether, but most of us will take a little while longer to actually work ourselves down the nicotine scale until we are on zero.  Even then, quit the habit of vaping can take some time.  Don’t go too quickly.

    1. If you are struggling, talk to people in your life who don’t smoke.

    Each one of us has people that hated the nasty habit of smoking.  They have always wanted us to quit, and now that we have, they are so happy for us.  They really are, I promise! Talk to them about your struggles, there is no shame in it.  Don’t hide it from them because that is the first step to going back to smoking.  They care and will help you through it.

    1. Make sure you take your vape everywhere.

    It may seem trivial, but if you are struggling to get through cravings, you need to have the reinforcements on your side. If you don’t, it becomes way too easy to walk in to the convenience store and buy a pack. And then all your good work of the last few months gets torn down, and you start from day one again.  You do not want that.

    1. Go hang out at your vape shop.

    There are people at these shops that are either at the stage that you are, or they have been through it.  The vape community is one of the most inclusive communities around, and they won’t hesitate to listen to you and give you advice on how to get through the struggle.  Just having people tell you that it will pass as long as you stay the course, is a huge help.  It is actually the main function of a vape shop if you think about it.  It brings people together who are all on the same path of quitting smoking.

    As you can see, there are somethings that you can do to help yourself, but the biggest one is moral support! If you have someone telling you that you can do it, that you are strong enough, it becomes easier.  Find your quitting buddy, hold each other accountable, and watch as your life continues to change for the better.

  • 4 Reasons to Drip: Your Guide to RDA Coil Building

    When it comes to vaping, there are many ways to partake in it, and there is no right or wrong way.  You will hear about vapers who are constantly telling you that you need to do it this way or that way, but what you need to be worrying about is the process of going from cigarettes to vaping to no nicotine vaping to eventually quitting

    That is what this movement is about.  It is about getting yourself off the addiction.  Now within that path, there are a number of ways that it can be done.  From pen style, box mod and tank, and then there is dripping.

    Dripping is literally the act of dripping e liquid onto coils that you wrapped yourself.  It is not as scary as many people would have you believe, but there are certain things that you will need to be mindful of, i.e. your batteries, the ohms that you are building to.

    But, if you believe that this hands on path is the way you want to go (I’m looking at you guys who are hand rolling your cigarettes especially), then let’s try to give you a bit of understanding.  (If you want to see how it’s done, skip to #4.)

    1. Dripping is for the hands on person.

    Do you enjoy using your hands to create? Well this is the portion of vaping that you will really enjoy.  Not only do you get to make something new, you can do it anyway you want to (within reason of course, damn math). 

    It’s also great for those who are looking to start vaping and roll their own cigarettes.  It’s a way to be able to customize your vaping experience just like you were when you were smoking.  You get to make your coil and wick exactly how you like it, which is hugely important for some of you.

    Also, once you understand how to do it and to make it well, almost all possibilities in the realm of imaginable can be done.  I’ve seen some pretty crazy builds come through the shop. 

    1. Coil Building causes you to know your device.

    That is not to say that you can just do it willy-nilly.  You really need to pay attention to what you are doing, but just by knowing that you are ahead of the game for many people.  You will know what your device is capable of, what your battery can do (understand your batteries people), and will know the ins and outs of wrapping in no time. 

    First Coil Attempt


    Actual first attempt for a coil, so you can do it as well.

    You will know what ohm you are at, what amps your battery is pushing, what your vg/pg split is on your e liquid.  It really is for the person who likes the all-encompassing factor of hobbies.  You purists will find yourself among these.

    1. Customized Vapor and Flavor Production

    Because you can build to any way you like, you can choose what you want.  Do you want better flavor? You can build it. How about huge clouds?  You can do that as well.  It is literally anyway you want it. 

    Have you seen these huge cloud competitions on the internet yet? Well they are not doing that without building their own coils.  They know what they want, and they build to it.  That’s what you get to do when you wrap your own coils.  Maybe your perfect vape is at .27 ohms instead of the standard sets of .5 or .2.  You can learn to do that.  It is all a matter of how seriously you want to take it.

    If you are more like me, you prefer the flavor portion of it more than the vapor production (I can hear the snickering from the back).  It is amazing how different some of the flavors that you have been vaping on forever will taste on an RDA.  You will taste some of the subtle hints that you wouldn’t normally get to in the prebuilt coils. It really can be a fantastic way to find a new flavor.

    1. You can start today if you really want to.

    Think it will take some time to get started on this whole idea? Well if you go into the shop, you can get you a RDA and you can get to wrapping.  We will watch over your first wrap with you or you can take it home and read this section to find out how to do it. 

    Things you will need:

    • RDA (Rebuildable Dripping Atomizer)
    • Kanthal A1 Wire: Usually comes in 22, 24, 26, 28, and 30 gauge. Most people will wrap with the 24 or 26 gauge wire, so it’s not a bad starting point.
    • Organic Cotton: something like KangerTech’s Japanese Organic or Cotton Bacon.
    • Clippers
    • Screwdriver (will be used to wrap coils and also to install on RDA, 3 millimeter in diameter would be preferred)
    • Ohm Reader: Essential, so don’t leave the shop without it.
    • Tweezer, preferably ceramic tipped as these can be used while firing your coil and won’t short out your build.
    • Needle nose pliers for pulling the wire tight.

    Now for a safety note: you need to check your coil builds on the Ohm reader before you start vaping.  It is important as you don’t want to be too low for you device.  You should also plan in a +/- 0.2 ohm variance.  It helps to keep you safe.

    This next portion may get a little long, but stick with it.  It is definitely worth it!

    Wrapping your first coil is going to be a bit intimidating, but just remember that you have no need to be perfect on your first wrap.  Just expect it not to be up to par so that when you decide to scrap it, you won’t be too upset.

    So for this first one, I’m going to give an example of what your coil should. It is a quick easy build that will get you to 0.5 ohms in resistance.

    You are going to take your screw driver and for your first one about 8-9 inches of 26 gauge Kanthal A1 wire.  As you get a bit more experienced in it, you will actually be able to cut this down, but it is easier to have a little more to work at the start.

    Take the screw driver and wire and with one hand you will hold and use the other to wrap.  Whichever way you decide to wrap, when the tail ends of the coil are facing in the same direction, count it as one wrap, and for this first coil we are going to want to end up with 7 wraps.  This is because we are using a 3 mm screwdriver and 26 gauge wire.  Each coil itself should end up as 1.0 ohms and when you put them together you will have yourself a 0.5 ohms coil build.

    To finish off each of these wraps you will want to make sure that each leg of the wire is facing the same direction and then snip off the wire.  Be sure to leave yourself a lead for attaching it to the RDA.

    Attaching it to the RDA

    It is a little tricky because you want to make sure that it will not touch the posts in the center, but also you do not want it to touch the outside of the RDA, as both of these could make it short out.  Now, the RDA has anywhere from 2 – 4 posts on it, where the outside posts are going to ground the wire (negative) and the inside posts are going to be your positive posts.  You have to attach the wire to both of them. (Look at the picture above; there are three with the outside ones negative and the inside post positive)

    For our build both of our wraps will attach to the center post and an outside one.  This is why we left the lead on the coil wraps as it will help us to position the wire in the RDA.  When you get it to where you want it, screw down the posts to hold it in place.  What you don’t want to do is screw it down so hard that it will cut the wire.  You want it to be tight and where the wire will not move.

    Once the wire is attached, you want to put it on your ohms reader and make sure that it reads want we set out to build.  If it is too low you will want to start again, but it should be fairly accurate. You definitely don't want to be building to low for your battery, so check out this site real quick to learn a little more about that.

    The next step is to work to get the hot spots out of your wires.  It is important as you want your coils to heat the same rate and cool down at the same rate from the center to the outside of the coil. Initially, you want to pulse your coil to see where it is heating up from.  And as this is your first coil, you will most likely have to put a little work into these ones to get them how you need them. 

    That is where the ceramic tweezers come in.  You are going to notice that there is space in between your coil so they aren’t heating up evenly.  What you want to do is to pulse your box while squeezing the coils together, until they heat up from the center out.  It definitely is easier with practice to make a more perfect coil. After you get it heating up perfectly, you want to strum your screwdriver over the coil to give it a perfectly even spacing.

    I promise you are almost done!

    The next step is to wick your coils.  The organic cotton that you have put aside is now to be used.  You will want to cut a strip of cotton for your wick.  You won’t need a huge amount for each side, and as you get a little more experienced you will be able to judge how much cotton you will need.  It is a little bit of trial and error for most people.

    You will want to take your cotton strip and roll both ends into a point, and then cut it down the middle.  Take the rolled ends and thread it through your coils and once they are in, even them out and cut them even.

    Take your tweezers and roll the cotton under into the juice well, being sure to leave some space under the coil for air flow.  After that, you will take your e liquid and paint your coils and cotton with it.  It will take a little more liquid then you think to get the cotton soaked, but don’t worry it really is just a learning experience.
